Jon Stewart is Leaving the Daily Show

According to the Associated Press, Comedy Central is saying that Jon Stewart is not going to be hosting the long-running TV news-comedy The Daily Show starting in June of this year.

Stewart began hosting the show in 1999, taking the place of it’s original host, Craig Kilborn, who began in 1996.

More accurately, Stewart is taking a break from hosting the show to direct a movie. The film is based on the events around Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari, who had been interviewed by Jason Jones of The Daily Show. Called “Rosewater”, the movie was written by Stewart and will be his first attempt at direction. He is also expected to come back in September, specifically Labor Day. That seems like an aggressive filming schedule, so I won’t be surprised if his hiatus is longer. In the interim, John Oliver is to be Stewart’s replacement. A good choice in my opinion, but Aasif Mandvi would have been a good one as well.

Here’s hoping that Stewart’s next film will be a sequel to Death to Smoochy.
